Chinua Achebe in his book “The Trouble in Nigeria” describes a patriot as a person who loves his country. He goes on further to explain patriotism as “….an emotion of love directed by critical intelligence”. A true patriot will always demand the highest standard of his country and accept nothing but the best for and from his people. He will be outspoken in condemnation of shortcomings without giving way to superiority, despair or cynicism.
Student leadership at St. Theresa Girl’s Secondary School is comprised of patriotic leaders who are filled with zeal and enthusiasm and are dedicated to lead and serve.
Being a student leader, I have come to realise that leaders are a cynosure of their subjects. STREGS has instilled in us the spirit of patriotism as described by Chinua Achebe and made us the kind of leaders Ban Ki Moon, the the former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), called on the youth to be when he says “As young leaders of tomorrow, you have the passion and energy and…..global vision”.
